6th-year grade-schooler http://anidb.net/ch35739 [Ayase Chihaya`s] dream is for her sister to be Japan`s top model. However, transfer student http://anidb.net/ch35741 [Wataya Arata] admonishes her that a dream must be about one`s own self. Thus, she takes up karuta, a Japanese card game, competitively. Together with Arata and http://anidb.net/ch35740 [Mashima Taichi], Chihaya`s childhood friend, they have great fun playing each other, but separate after graduation.
4 years later, Chihaya returns to town. Although Arata no longer plays the game, she believes that they will eventually reunite as long as she continues karuta. Together with Taichi, she establishes the Mizusawa High-school Karuta Club.

Far away from Hikaru no Go…
I cant remember anymore when madhouse produced something I liked…
The first half of the show was full of feelings and really good, but the second half was just boring matches or between characters you didn`t care too much, clearly building for the second season but also ruined the ending of this season.
Never before have I heard about this [i]karuta[/i] game. It seems both ridiculous and boring to me, yet this is where the magic of anime kicks in: in Chihayafuru, it looks like the best thing in the whole universe.
Despite girly tears and a love triangle, the show is enjoyable, has well developed characters and heart melting animation.
Recommended if you liked Hikaru no Go.
Recommended if you liked Hikaru No Go, or if you`ve enjoyed sports anime or anime about high school clubs.
If you`re into Hikaru no Go and similiar anime then this is definetly for you. I loved it. Got hooked right from the start. Can`t wait for the 2nd season. Totally recommended.

Whoever thought that obscure sports were boring might want to reconsider after having watched Hikaru no Go. For all the people who could appreciate that show, Chihayafuru might be your cup of tea as well. Not as good as HnG, but nevertheless entertaining enough to keep you watching.
This awesome anime is worth your time, I was in doubt when I started to watch it for the first time, but then … I felt like I was part of this beautiful story.
